Schibsted Media to Acquire Telia’s TV & Media Division – Expanding Nordic Media Presence

Schibsted Media has signed an agreement to acquire Telia Company’s TV & Media business (TVM), which includes two of the most prominent TV broadcasters in the Nordics: TV4 in Sweden and MTV in Finland. The acquisition marks a significant strategic step for Schibsted in strengthening its position in independent journalism, investing in high-quality content, and developing attractive media offerings across the Nordic region.

Strengthening Independent Media in the Nordics

“TV4 and MTV are recognized, independent news providers and key players in upholding democratic values at the national level. They are also leaders in high-quality entertainment and drama production. This makes Schibsted Media a strong, long-term owner,” said Siv Juvik Tveitnes, CEO of Schibsted Media.

With support from The Tinius Trust, which owns Schibsted Media, the group intends to preserve and further develop TV4 and MTV as trusted and independent media institutions.

Complementary Presence in Sweden

Schibsted’s digital media portfolio in Sweden — including Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet, Omni, and Podme — is complemented by TV4’s strong position in multi-platform news, sports, and entertainment.

“Since Aftonbladet became part of Schibsted in 1996, we have been deeply engaged in Sweden. This is a historic day for us. As media competition intensifies, it is more important than ever to build nationally rooted media positions with the scale and investment power required to ensure editorial independence,” Tveitnes added.

Major Leap in Finland

In Finland, acquiring MTV represents a major expansion for Schibsted Media, which has so far had a limited presence in the market through podcast platform Podme. With MTV’s strong market position and established brand, Schibsted aims to strengthen its presence in Finnish news, sports, and entertainment.

Exploring Joint Opportunities

Schibsted and TVM will jointly explore opportunities in areas such as content rights, personalization, advertising, and subscription models to create more value for both users and advertisers.

“Our priority is to focus on what Telia does best – providing world-class communication services used by millions every day. This agreement gives TV & Media a long-term Nordic owner that can continue to develop the business while preserving editorial independence,” said Patrik Hofbauer, CEO of Telia Company.

Telia and Schibsted will maintain a multi-year distribution partnership, ensuring continued availability of TV4 and MTV content in Telia’s TV offerings.

Financial Details

The enterprise value of TVM in the transaction is SEK 6.55 billion (cash- and debt-free basis). In 2024, TVM reported external operating revenues of SEK 8.16 billion and an adjusted EBITDA of SEK 313 million. At year-end, the division had 887,000 subscribers, representing a 13% year-over-year increase.

TV4 remains the most-watched TV channel in Sweden by viewing time and share, according to audience measurement firm MMS.

Closing Timeline

The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to close by the third quarter of 2025.
